Mineral Processing & Metallurgical Innovation
Processing is where mining value is actually created and where the industry’s most persistent efficiency and sustainability challenges have been quietly accumulating. Energy consumption in comminution alone accounts for 30 to 50% of total mine site energy use. Declining ore grades mean operations are handling larger volumes of lower-quality feed for the same metal output. That drives up reagent consumption, water demand, and tailings generation together.
Downstream customers in battery manufacturing and specialty alloys are demanding higher purity and traceability standards, which conventional processing methods were not built to handle at large scale. The issues of grade decline, pressure for purity, and rising energy costs have all converged, making metallurgical innovation a key strategic focus. As a result, investing in new solutions has become harder to postpone.
Technologies such as high-pressure grinding rolls, bioleaching for low-grade sulfide ores, and electrochemical refining have transitioned from laboratory feasibility to commercial use. However, a substantial gap still exists between their performance in controlled settings and their effectiveness at industrial scale.
Knowing which technology is genuinely ready and which requires further development investment is not obvious from the outside. Stellarix helps mining companies and processing technology providers assess the metallurgical innovation landscape and build the commercial case for adoption where capital allocation is under real scrutiny.
Our Experience:
- A global mining company engaged us to assess comminution technology alternatives, evaluating high-pressure grinding roll configurations and advanced classification systems against energy reduction potential and ore body compatibility at two operating sites.
- Stellarix conducted a technology intelligence study on bioleaching and hydrometallurgical innovations for low-grade sulfide ore bodies, mapping commercial-scale deployments and applicability to the client’s specific ore chemistry profile.
- A specialty metals producer engaged Stellarix for a competitive intelligence study on electrochemical refining and high-purity metal production, examining where investment was concentrating among technology developers and which downstream markets were driving the strongest purity requirements.
