Water, Tailings & Environmental Management

Mining companies have traditionally viewed water stress and tailings liability as operational challenges. Today, they are considered critical issues at the boardroom level. Water scarcity remains a significant production limitation in key mining regions such as Chile, Australia, southern Africa, and the southwestern US, and this scarcity is worsening. Meanwhile, tailings storage facilities pose the industry’s greatest environmental risks, with recent dam failures fundamentally changing expectations among regulators, financiers, and local communities regarding design, monitoring, and emergency protocols.

The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management is now recognized by leading project financiers as a fundamental requirement. Water discharge rules are becoming stricter. Community resistance to water-heavy operations is emerging as a significant project risk, potentially delaying permits and social license approvals in ways that were less prominent in project economics ten years ago. Organizations should  shift their focus toward:

  • Tailoring real-time monitoring and early warning technologies to site-specific conditions rather than applying uniform solutions across structurally different dam types and geologies.
  • Evaluating paste and dry stack tailings where water recovery and geotechnical stability justify the capital premium.
  • Designing water circuit strategies that reduce freshwater consumption without compromising processing performance.
  • Strengthening community and environmental monitoring frameworks to build the social license that project timelines increasingly depend on.

Stellarix supports mining companies and environmental technology providers in assessing technology options, evaluating regulatory exposure, and building environmental management strategies that address both compliance and long-term operational resilience.

Our Experience:

  • A mining company in a water-stressed region engaged us for a technology intelligence study on closed-loop water circuit technologies. We evaluated advanced filtration, evaporation reduction, and process water recycling solutions against its ore processing profile. The study identified 3+ technology pathways with the strongest fit for the client’s water reduction targets and operational constraints.
  • We assessed the tailings monitoring technology landscape for a mining major, profiling 9+ real-time sensor platforms, satellite-based deformation monitoring, and AI-driven stability prediction systems against the client’s facility risk classification and regulatory requirements. The assessment delivered a prioritized shortlist of monitoring solutions aligned with the client’s most critical facility risk profiles.
  • A project finance lender approached us to conduct a regulatory intelligence study on evolving tailings management standards, mapping Global Industry Standard requirements and lender due diligence expectations across 5 key mining jurisdictions. The findings provided the client with a structured risk assessment framework that it could apply consistently across project financing decisions.
