Accelerating Innovation in Bioenergy and Sustainable Fuels

Bioenergy rapidly shifts from a sustainability initiative to a strategic requirement with growing decarbonization mandates across industries. Though Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production exceeded  2.1 million tonnes, it still accounts for less than 1% of global jet fuels. The investment priorities and commercialization decisions are exposed to several primary constraints, including production economics, technology selection, feedstock availability, and supply security.

As an innovation strategy partner, our bioenergy strategy consulting assists organizations in navigating this evolving market. From assessing feedstock availability to evaluating emerging conversion technologies, analyzing regulatory and investment landscapes, and identifying commercialization opportunities, we are supporting clients in positioning for long-term growth as they build resilience across the renewable fuels value chain.

Core Focus Areas

Guiding companies to build competitive advantage in the emerging sustainable fuels landscape.

Biofuels

Feedstock competition and tightening sustainability regulations are reshaping investment priorities in the biofuels market. Global demand is growing with blending mandates, but its expansion is increasingly relying on advanced conversion of waste and residues. We are helping companies assess biofuel technologies, position portfolios, and navigate regulatory frameworks.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)

SAF is becoming pivotal for aviation decarbonization. However, its production levels are meeting less than 1% of global aviation fuel requirements. Technology scalability and feedstock availability remain critical challenges. We are supporting organizations in assessing alcohol-to-jet technologies and e-fuels, developing commercially feasible compliance and feedstock strategies.

Ethanol

The ethanol segment is expanding into alcohol-to-jet pathways, creating new opportunities in the sustainable aviation fuel market. The long-term growth dynamics are also reshaping with feedstock economics, policies, and consistent investment in cellulosic technologies. We are assisting organizations in identifying emerging demand opportunities, anticipating regulatory developments, assessing ATJ/ cellulosic production pathways, and evaluating ethanol value chains.

Biogas

Governments worldwide are prioritizing biogas and biomethane to accelerate decarbonization and strengthen energy resilience. Biomethane is poised to play a key role in helping nations meet 2030 targets. We are supporting companies in developing commercialization strategies, assessing feedstock aggregation models, and developing reliable projects across emerging markets.

Strategic Hurdles in Bioenergy & Sustainable Fuels Readiness

Unlocking the path from regional biofuel markets to scalable, globally certified low-carbon fuel ecosystems:

Policy Fragmentation and Incentive Dependence

Sustainable fuel project economies remain highly dependent on subsidies, mandates, and carbon credit frameworks that are diverse across regions. Over 60% of biofuel growth till 2030 is expected from a fraction of policy-supported markets, while the EU sets binding renewable transport targets and SAF mandates. These developments create vulnerabilities to incentive reductions, credit price volatility, and policy changes.

Feedstock selection is becoming a strategic sustainability issue rather than a purely cost-driven decision. The EU’s RED III framework limits the contribution of food- and feed-crop biofuels toward renewable transport targets, while advanced biofuels derived from wastes and residues are expected to drive most future sector growth. As a result, feedstock legitimacy is becoming as important as feedstock pricing.

Sustainable fuels remain structurally more expensive than their non-renewable counterparts. As per estimates, SAF can cost twice as much as conventional jet fuel, which means adoption will rely heavily on incentives and policy mandates rather than price parity. At the same time, volatile feedstock prices continue to create significant margin pressure across biofuel and SAF value chains.

Growing access to premium low-carbon fuel markets increasingly relies on verified lifecycle emissions reductions. Typical regulatory policies demand fuels to demonstrate GHG savings against fossil baselines, as EU mandates certified emissions-savings thresholds for renewable fuels and SAF. Feedstock attestation, certification readiness, and traceability are becoming critical commercial requirements.

Demand for used cooking oil, animal fats, and agricultural residues is rising faster than reliable, traceable supply. However, feedstock availability is still a constraint for bringing SAF and advanced biofuels to policy-mandated volumes. SAF accounts for less than 1% of total jet fuel used despite rapidly increasing mandates. Verifiable sourcing is surfacing as a primary challenge for industry expansion.

Blending limits, fuel distribution infrastructure, and engine certification requirements keep limiting the scaling capacities of sustainable fuels. SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) leverage certified drop-in compatibility with the current aviation system but only up to pre-defined blend limitations. However, marine, road, and aviation sectors have varying infrastructure readiness levels. Speed of deployment wouldn’t just depend on fuel production capacity but on how fast storage networks and existing transport accommodate these fuels.
