Mining Electrification & Decarbonization

The net-zero commitments announced by major mining companies are considerably easier to make than to deliver. Diesel haulage, process heat, and emissions embedded in explosives and reagents remain difficult to decarbonize, and electrification addresses only part of the challenge. At the same time, investors and regulators are scrutinizing Scope 1 and 2 emissions more closely, while carbon content is increasingly influencing procurement decisions.
Battery-electric haul trucks are gaining traction, but their economics remain viable only under specific operating conditions. Energy density limitations and charging infrastructure continue to constrain adoption across high-payload surface mines. Hydrogen is also emerging as a promising option for process heat and long-haul haulage, although its total cost of ownership remains a significant hurdle outside purpose-built mining regions.
The transition calls for investment decisions grounded in operational feasibility rather than technology ambition. There is a need to focus on:

  • Assessing site-level electrification based on haul distances, payload, elevation, and energy availability.
  • Evaluating renewable power procurement and on-site generation to improve energy resilience in remote operations.
  • Building Scope 3 strategies that align with customer expectations while remaining operationally practical.
  • Identifying carbon offset pathways that remain credible under evolving verification standards.

Stellarix assists mining companies and equipment providers in exploring decarbonization options, evaluating technology and infrastructure readiness, and developing energy transition strategies that align with their operational and commercial needs.

Our Experience:

  • A global mining company asked us to assess the feasibility and technology insights for adopting battery-electric haul trucks. We analyzed payload performance, charging infrastructure, and total cost of ownership for four different sites. The outcome was a tailored electrification adoption roadmap framework specific to each site, rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
  • We conducted a market intelligence study of the electrified mining equipment landscape for a mining equipment manufacturer. The study examined OEM adoption timelines and competitive dynamics between established providers and emerging entrants. It identified 2 market segments where electrification adoption was accelerating ahead of most OEM planning assumptions, enabling informed decisions on product prioritization and partnerships.
  • Our metal and mining consulting experts conducted a feasibility and technology assessment of renewable energy procurement and on-site generation pathways for remote mine sites. Our study examined solar, storage, and green hydrogen not as theoretical options, but as commercially viable solutions grounded in site-level feasibility. The findings delivered a practical, site-specific decarbonization roadmap, enabling them to move beyond diesel dependency and deliver measurable Scope 1 reductions.
