Turning Energy Storage Growth into Strategic Advantage

Energy storage is the cornerstone of the renewable energy transition, accelerating greater resilience, grid flexibility, and renewable integration. With installed power-sector battery capacity crossing 280 GW globally, it is clear that project economics are improving as competition intensifies. However, increasingly stringent lifecycle requirements, shifting grid regulations, and supply chain risks are reshaping investment priorities.

We are supporting clients in evaluating emerging storage technologies, evaluating commercialization pathways, battery lifecycle strategies, optimizing supply chains, and aligning R&D strategies with long-term business objectives.

Core Focus Areas

Navigating the next frontier of energy storage technologies.

Battery Storage

With battery costs falling by nearly 90% and power-sector battery storage increasing by 100% in recent years, supply chain resilience, critical mineral availability, and technology selection now define competitive advantage. We support clients in optimizing business models, evaluating storage technologies, and building scalable deployment strategies.

Thermal

Advanced thermal energy storage technologies, including particle-based storage and thermal batteries, are proving more cost-effective than electrochemical storage for extended duration and industrial decarbonization requirements. We help organizations prioritize high-value industrial applications, build commercialization strategies, and evaluate technology options for enhanced economic and operational returns.

Mechanical Storage

Although pumped hydro makes up most of the world’s installed energy storage capacity, flywheel and gravity-based technologies are providing expanding opportunities against geographical limits. We are assisting companies in benchmarking and assessing mechanical storage technologies, identifying commercially feasible deployment opportunities, and assessing mechanical storage technologies.

Strategic Hurdles in Energy Storage

Understanding and navigating the universal challenges from lab-scale innovation to gigawatt-scale deployment.

Supply Chain Volatility & Critical Minerals

The highly concentrated energy storage supply chains are exposing manufacturers to procurement, pricing, and geopolitical risks. With Congo supplying roughly 70% of global mined cobalt and China controlling over 70% of graphite, cobalt, and lithium refining capacities, there is significant pressure to build supply diversification, procurement, and long-term sourcing resilience.

For battery developers, balancing higher energy density with operational safety is still a critical challenge. Thermal runaway continues to be the primary failure mode, prompting larger-scale battery installation and stricter safety standards. At the same time, battery degradation brings down asset value, efficiency, and capacity over time, increasing the significance of advanced BMS (battery management systems) for improving project bankability and lifecycle performance.

Battery manufacturers are exposed to cost, quality, and yield challenges due to scaling battery production from pilot lines to gigafactories. Scrap rates increase and impact production economics. As global battery manufacturing capacity is slated to exceed demand by 2030, high production yields and manufacturing capacity will be competitive differentiators in the coming years.

While adoption of lithium-ion technology is increasing at an unprecedented pace, its 6- 8-hour discharge durations challenge the economics. Deep grid decarbonization demands multiple days of operational capability, but LDES faces significant LCOS (levelized cost of storage) challenge. Even though battery costs have reduced, similar cost reductions are yet to materialize.

Energy storage deployment is constrained by evolving market regulations and grid infrastructure instead of technology readiness. As global interconnection queues expand to thousands of gigawatts, there is considerable uncertainty around long-term investment returns and project revenues due to evolving ancillary service markets and capacity mechanisms.

The exceptional pace of battery deployment is outpacing the existing recycling and compliance infrastructure of the industry. Regulations like the EU Battery Regulation mandate minimum recycled content and digital battery passports along with material recovery targets for nickel, cobalt, and lithium. The current selection of recycling technologies remains commercially challenging and energy-intensive, raising the need for end-to-end traceability and scalable recycling capabilities.
