Physical-Digital Convergence Analysis
The value of Industry 4.0 increasingly sits at the intersection of information technology and operational technology. It is also where much of the execution risk sits. Connecting machines, data, analytics, and enterprise systems can create a more responsive and intelligent factory, but only when the underlying IT/OT architecture allows these systems to work together.
IIoT networks, digital twins, simulation environments, and 5G-enabled connectivity are making it possible to link factory operations with enterprise decision-making in ways that were difficult to achieve with traditional manufacturing architectures. Interoperability standards are becoming equally important as manufacturers connect technologies from multiple vendors and attempt to modernize existing infrastructure without disrupting production.
The difficulty is rarely the availability of technology. It is the integration between technologies, functions, and ownership structures. Our convergence assessments show that many Industry 4.0 programs struggle at the IT/OT interface rather than at the sensor or analytics layer. Different standards, fragmented ownership, legacy infrastructure, and unclear cybersecurity responsibilities can prevent connected technologies from delivering their intended value. Cybersecurity exposure can also increase as previously isolated operational environments become connected to enterprise networks, cloud platforms, and external systems.
For manufacturers, the investment question is therefore broader than which connected-factory technologies to adopt. The priority is to establish the architecture, interoperability standards, governance, and security framework that allows those technologies to scale across the factory network.
Stellarix helps industrial organizations develop IT/OT convergence strategies that align technology investments with manufacturing priorities. Our work covers convergence-readiness assessment, interoperability strategy, cyber-physical architecture, connected-factory technology evaluation, and Industry X.0 roadmaps.
Our Experience:
- A manufacturer engaged Stellarix to define the correct sequence for its transition to Industry 4.0. We evaluated its existing OT and IT landscape, pinpointed gaps in system integration and ownership, and helped the client establish new standards before connected-factory systems were purchased. The roadmap laid out by our experts also assisted them in avoiding disconnected pilots and building a scalable foundation for its smart manufacturing program.
- Our consulting team evaluated cross-domain interoperability standards for an industrial operator against its installed base and technology roadmap. We assessed 30+ architecture and protocol options and committed the client to a standards path that avoided the vendor lock-in its pilots were drifting toward.
