Low-Carbon Alternatives & Transition Fuels
The commercial viability of low-carbon fuels is no longer dependent on technology alone. Ammonia, hydrogen, renewable diesel, and e-fuels are all at different stages of commercialization. The result is a big gap between ambition and FID that persists as a chokepoint against the rapidly expanding infrastructure, especially in ammonia and hydrogen segments. This increasing gap is yielding uncertainty for prospective offtakers aiming to manage bankability, supply, and pricing complications.
Biofuels and renewable diesel remain sensitive to feedstock availability and evolving policy incentives, while synthetic e-fuels need to surpass production complexities before commercialization.
The investment decisions on transition fuels need to focus on commercial readiness parameters, including cost competitiveness, verified carbon intensity, and reliable demand and supply dynamics. Companies should also acknowledge carbon accounting and certification capabilities as strategic infrastructure. Establishment of auditable, centralized operational flow across multiple jurisdictions will be the key to better market positioning in this segment.
Stellarix is helping industrial companies, infrastructure investors, and energy producers in evaluating low-carbon fuel opportunities through commercial, technology, and regulatory assessments. We have completed more than 35 engagements across low-carbon fuels, including hydrogen and ammonia project screening, biofuel feedstock strategy, and carbon-intensity certification readiness.
Our Experience:
- Developed a renewable diesel feedstock strategy for a refiner. Our team mapped waste-oil and advanced-feedstock availability across three sourcing regions and structured contracts.
- Conducted technology scouting across next-generation electrolyzer platforms for a leading energy company. We screened over 35 developers on degradation efficiency, manufacturing scalability, and stack efficiency. It helped the client prioritize their equity investments.
- Delivered a techno-commercial assessment of SAF production routes for an aviation company. We benchmarked alcohol-to-jet, power-to-liquid, and HEFA pathways against CORSIA, levelized costs, and feedstock exposure readiness parameters.
