Patenting DNA, the Building Element of Life – Trends and Governing Laws

Abstract: Patenting DNA, the basic element of life form is an area of prime importance and debate for its commercial value. There have been numerous cases in past wherein companies have strived to get the maximum coverage on gene patents and where government has acted as strict watchman to reject patent claims asking for “too much.” This article is an endeavor to summarize some of the key decisions in “world of gene patenting” and the role of governments from time to time in shaping up the patent laws on patenting microbes, plants, animals and human.
