Granted Patent Analysis: 5th April

If you will see the following graph which highlights the number of patents granted to a few big tech companies on April 5, 2011. You can observe that Google had only two patents granted. Compare that to Samsung, which had 98 patents granted. Microsoft had 37 patents granted. IBM is, of course, tycoon of them all with 102 patents granted in a week alone.

The above analysis is pretty interesting.

Google is concerned to increase its patent portfolio. That is why Google has decided to bid ($900m) for Nortel’s Patent Portfolio in the company bankruptcy auction.

Nortel patent portfolio includes about 6,000 patents and patent applications spanning a broad range of technology including wireless, data networking and semiconductors.

This portfolio will create a disincentive for others to sue Google, and also help the open source community which is integrally involved in projects like Android and Chrome.
